The Whiting family (Fred, Albert and Cyril) held this role without interruption between the years of 1911 and 1989. The author of the James Bond books, Ian Fleming used a variation of the Whiting name ('Albert Blacking') in describing the professional who sets up the golfing duel between Bond and Goldfinger in his book 'Goldfinger'. This gripping match took place at the imaginary course Royal St. Marks, which is clearly based on Royal St. George's, where Fleming was Captain-elect at the time of his sudden death in 1964. |
